WHY YOUR LEATHER DEGRADES AND HOW TO PRESERVE IT
The fiber structure of leather has no definite pattern. This characteristic allows the leather to stretch in all directions thousands of times from normal daily use without damaging the leather itself.
Because only the top layer of automotive leather is dyed, normal daily use causes stretching and flexing of the surface coating (dye color). The stretching of the dye coat produces micro cracks that at first, are not visible to the human eye, but are the beginning stages of normal wear lines in the leather or vinyl.
Over time, dust, body oils, salts, from skin, sun damage, food, beverages, and even skin oils from pets transfer into these creases producing one or more defined lines at first and then multiple lines we call normal wear lines that travel in various directions. They appear to be cracks, but this is actually the beginning of some color loss in the wear creases. If left untreated these areas will deepen and can eventually peel or crack open. In addition, UV rays and heat breakdown the nutrients applied to the leather during the tanning process causing them to evaporate resulting in premature dryness and loss of flexibility which accelerates the ware of the leather’s surface. When the surface of the leather is dried out your clothes act like a fine grade sandpaper slowly sanding down the surface as you slide in and out of your vehicle. The result of this is loss of color on the leather’s surface.
If the leather is not properly moisturized the leather will continue to lose color and then the hide itself will be worn down leading to a breakdown of the fibers and eventually the leather will open up as if it were cut.
You can slow down this degradation and extend the durability and pliability of the leather by replacing the loss of lanolin's and oils on a regular basis. This applies to leather that is new or leather that has been owned before. To avoid damaging your leather do not use cleaners or conditioners that may cause unknown results on your leather.
